MTV woos German aud

BERLIN — In an attempt to win back viewers who have moved over to the German-lingo music video web Viva, MTV Europe announced plans Thursday to launch four hours a day of special programming for its German-speaking audience.

With its English-speaking VJs and pan-European programming, MTV Europe has been beaten in the ratings race by Cologne-based video channel Viva, which shows about 40% German music.

“MTV Hitlist German” will introduce the Teutonic Top 20, while “Select MTV” will allow audiences to call in requests in German. A German VJ will interview viewers on the weekday program “MTV In Touch.” “MTV Hot” will be a locally oriented news and gossip show.
