Madonna sets Modotti biopic

Madonna, who currently appears as Eva Peron in “Evita,” has inked a deal to portray the photographer and revolutionist Tina Modotti, for Mick Jagger’s Jagged Films.

Gabriel Byrne is attached to star opposite Madonna, as Vittorio Vidale, one of Modotti’s many lovers. Byrne also will shoulder exec producing chores.

Jagger and Victoria Pearman will produced the film, based on a Modotti biography by Margaret Hooks and a screenplay by Michael Love and Martin Salinas.

Pic tells the story of the Italian-born Modotti, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and became a photographer after a stint as an actress in Hollywood silent films. During the ’30s Modotti became known for her photography as well as for her political activism in Mexico and Europe. She died mysteriously in 1942 at the age of 45. In recent years her work has commanded high prices at art auctions around the world.

“I’ve always been intrigued by the life of Tina Modotti,” said Madonna. “She was an incredible woman and as an actress, it is a great role for me to play.”

While Hollywood’s interest was sparked by last year’s UC San Diego exhibition of a recently discovered cache of Modotti photos, Jagged was already in development on the project.
