PRAGUE — Czechs roared their approval of “Kolya” at the Czech Lion film awards held on March 2. “Kolya” took home half of the 12 awards, including best picture and best director for Jan Sverak.
Tiny Andrei Chalimon, taking a break from first-grade classes in Moscow, was an audience favorite, accepting the best supporting actor award. Zdenek Sverak took home best screenplay. The other “Kolya” wins went to Libuse Safrankova for best actress and Alois Fisarek for editing.
“Forgotten Light” and “King Ubu” divided the remaining awards.
“Forgotten Light” picked up best actor for Boleslav Polivka, supporting actress for Veronika Ziilkova, and best sound for Radim Hladik Jr. “King Ubu” ‘s trio of technical awards went to F.A. Brabec for camera, Jindrich Goetz for design, and Lubos Fiser, who presented the award for best music to himself.
Jiri Menzel was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
