Touchstone Pictures is putting the Italian megahit “The Cyclone” on a fast track for an American remake, the company said Sunday.
The $2 million Italian-language pic, which grossed more than $40 million in Italy, also was picked up by Buena Vista Intl. for all overseas rights outside of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Scandinavia and Hong Kong.
Cecchi Gori, the pic’s original producer, will retain U.S. rights.
Touchstone prexy Donald DeLine flew into Cannes over the weekend to announce the remake project, which marks yet another foreign-language pic that a Disney company has optioned for an American remake in recent months. Touchstone senior veepees Todd Garner and Jordi Ros will oversee the remake, based on the original story of four beautiful flamenco dancers who arrive in a small Tuscany village and turn things upside down.
Vittorio Cecchi Gori, Rita Cecchi Gori and Gianni Nunnari are also set to produce the English version. The original starred and was helmed by Leonardo Pieraccione.
