Columbia TriStar TV Distribution has tapped Russ Krasnoff to be executive vice president of programming and to lead CTTD’s expansion into several new programming areas, including cable TV.
Krasnoff was most recently senior VP of programming at Sony TV Entertainment. In his new job, he will oversee creation, development and production of all original programming for firstrun syndication, cable and non-primetime network dayparts.
His position is broader than the post formerly held by Alan Perris, who left his job as senior VP of firstrun pro-gramming at CTTD to take a similar role at Warner Bros. last summer, according to CTTD president Barry Thurston, to whom Krasnoff will report.
Like Perris, Krasnoff will be responsible for oversight of current programming, such as the talker “Ricki Lake.” But Krasnoff also will be in charge of coordinating joint productions between CTTD and other Sony divi-sions, including Columbia TriStar TV and Columbia TriStar Intl. TV. Kids’ series “Beakman’s World,” for in-stance, is a co-production of CTTD and CTT.
Never before has the Col syndie division concentrated seriously on cable or non-primetime network programming, but Krasnoff is expected to change that, focusing CTTD more heavily in the hour drama arena, for instance. Thurston said Krasnoff will bring some STE projects with him and probably will be hiring more people to reflect the additional duties.
“We’re trying to expand our companies,” Thurston said. “Russ brings an expertise in the international arena that will make it easier to follow through fully on the international front.”
At STE, Krasnoff was responsible for network programming for daytime and latenight, as well as primetime shows dealing heavily with high-tech special effects. He also oversaw development of cable shows and international co-productions.
Before that post, he was senior VP of series development at Columbia TriStar TV, where he oversaw production of network series, including “Early Edition.” Before he started working for the TV divisions at Sony, Krasnoff asso-ciate produced the movie “Side Out” for TriStar Pictures. He also was a founder of Krown Entertainment Market-ing Group in 1983.
