ABC settles into Mexico digs

NEW YORK — ABC News this week opens its 10th foreign bureau, in Mexico City, reversing a 1980s practice of shuttering overseas outposts.

“World News Tonight” anchor Peter Jennings will inaugurate the bureau today and Tuesday, basing “World News” there to coincide with President Clinton’s visit, and Mexico City will replace Miami as HQ of ABC’s Latin American coverage.

The bureau will employ a handful of staffers, including a correspondent and producer/bureau chief, and is the web’s first in the region. NBC and CNN already staff Mexico City bureaus.
