’97 NABA confab marks org’s 25th lap

The North American Broadcasters Assn. will mark its 25th year at the annual meeting Jan. 22-24 in Mexico City.

Members of the nonprofit organization include ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, National Public Radio, Turner Broadcasting System, A&E, DirecTV, ESPN, Home Box Office, Voice of America and the National Assn. of Broadcasters in the U.S.; the CBC, CanWest Global Communications Corp., the CTV Television Network, the Canadian Broadcasters Rights Agency, NetStar Communications Inc. and Vision TV in Canada; and Canal 11, Televisa and TV Azteca in Mexico.

“What better time than when we’re marking a quarter-century to spend a few days thinking about the future of broadcasting on this continent and abroad,” said secretary-general Bill Roberts. “Particularly the dramatic transition from analog to digital technology.”

NABA was formed in Rome in 1972 to provide a seat for North American broadcasters at the inaugural conference of the World Broadcasting Unions. It now represents the interests of broadcasting at international conferences dealing with technical standards, press freedom, intellectual property and operational matters.
