MEXICO CITY — Fox Sports Americas has promoted Andrew Thau to the position of vice president and general manager, the Latin American net announced on Wednesday.
Thau will be based in Los Angeles, where he will oversee all aspects of the 24-hour Spanish-language sports channel, including affiliate sales and relations, ad sales, marketing and promotion and programming.
Most recently, Thau was the vice president of affiliate sales for Fox Latin America Channels and the assistant general manager at Fox Sports Americas.
In addition to expanding distribution, Thau told Daily Variety the net will focus on tailoring programming to local markets to attract both advertisers and subscribers.
“We are heading towards more regionalization and localization,” Thau said.
Fox Sports Americas currently has about 6.7 million subscribers in Latin America and in the United States. Its main competitor, ESPN, has more than 8 million in Latin America alone. Thau acknowledged that ESPN is the dominant sports channel.
“We expect to compete, though,” he said. “I think there is room for both channels. It’s not a game of killing the other guy.”
