NEW YORK — CBS’ TV station group named longtime Westinghouse exec Joseph Berwanger to the new post of exec VP of sales, seeking to fulfill a mission by CBS Stations chief Mel Karmazin to boost revenue at the company’s 14 O&O outlets.
Berwanger, most recently president of spot-sales arm CBS Television Sales, will ride herd on general managers to meet increased sales targets. The stations this month switched to a commission-only payment system for their sales forces.
Richard Sheingold, Berwanger’s former deputy as exec VP at CBS Television Sales, will succeed him as president of the unit, which is being renamed CBS Spot Sales. The division sells ad time in local markets to national or regional advertisers.
Both Berwanger and Sheingold will report to CBS Television Stations prexy Jonathan Klein.
Berwanger, earlier prexy of Group W Television Sales, worked for 13 years at Westinghouse-owned KDKA Pittsburgh, most recently as VP-G.M.
Sheingold, also a longtime Group W exec, worked at Group W Prods. for seven years before being named exec VP at CBS Television Sales in 1996.
