Supergrass

Supergrass wrapped up a short eight-city U.S. club tour at a very packed Troubadour, and the English pop trio --- singer-guitarist Gaz Coombes, bassist Danny Goffey, drummer Mick Quinn --- further solidified its reputation as one of the most talented of the current Britpop lot with a high-energy 70-minute show arranged around their outstanding new Capitol album "In It for the Money." Not burdened by the egotistical trappings or performance hesitations that afflict so many of its British brethren, Supergrass instead attacked the Troub stage with restless abandon. The dynamic set, without ballads or other slow moments, comprised energetic three- and three-minute pop gems in the tradition of the Kinks and the Sweet.

Such high-octane new numbers as “Cheap Skate,” the buoyant first single from “In It for the Money,” as well as the John Lennon-esque “You Can See Me” and the celebratory anxiety of “Tonight” were standouts, as were older songs such as U.K. hits “Caught by the Fuzz” and “Strange Ones.”

Supergrass returns to the U.S. this summer for a tour with the Foo Fighters. The band has boldly distinguished itself from the bulk of modern Britpop with a light-hearted and endearing approach to their music, never taking anything but the music seriously.

The least we could do, then, is show them the money.
