Maxwell

With his new "Unplugged" EP just three weeks old and his platinum debut, "Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite" (Columbia), still hanging tough on the pop charts 64 weeks after its release, it's no surprise that this retro-soul Casanova packed the Greek for the second time in five weeks during the glutted summer concert season. Maxwell plays it easy and comfortable, makes his fans feel at home by grooving with the crowd rather than for them. As much as he has earned a solid female aud --- and the staccato bumps of his rump elicited screams from the ladies --- a bluesy lament about "triflin' women" struck a chord with the fellas; His gorgeous falsetto on Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" inspired catcalls from both sexes.

With:
Band: Maxwell, Darrell Smith, Andre Roberson, Greg Moore, Michael Neal, Kerry Griffin, Angel Figueroa, La Tina Webb, Michael Dickerson, Khaliq Kenoly. Reviewed Aug. 7, 1997.

Maxwell plays a distinct mix of down-to-Earth humility and sly but measured sensuality that make his mild theatrics — rising from smoke machine haze on “Whenever Wherever Whatever,” for instance — almost superfluous. His band played with a coveted tightness, giving Maxwell plenty of room to spread his personality for 90 minutes.
