LONDON — The comedy troupe League of Gentleman has won the prestigious Perrier “Pick of the Fringe” award at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, an accolade that has proved to be career-making for many comedians.
League of Gentleman members Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss, Reece Sheersmith and non-acting writing partner Jeremy Dyson are known for their very dark sense of humor.
The 29-year-old Pemberton has worked as an editorial assistant at Daily Variety’s London office the past six years.
The Perrier (as it is commonly known) traditionally has been a springboard to at least domestic stardom in the U.K. The award was won by the Cambridge Footlights in 1981 — the award’s inaugural year — a troupe that included Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry.
League of Gentleman soon will begin a radio series for the BBC. They currently are playing to packed houses in Edinburgh, and are discussing possible TV projects with a number of producers.
