Charles Koones, associate publisher of Variety and Daily Variety, has added the title of U.S. publishing director. Koones’ new responsibilities include oversight of Variety’s domestic business operations, in addition to the areas of sales and marketing, which he currently heads. Koones will continue to report to Variety VP and publisher Gerry Byrne.
In addition, Rose Einstein has been promoted to managing director, U.S. sales; associate sales director Robyn Dalbey-Dunn takes over as Los Angeles sales director.
Koones, 34, has been with Variety since 1990, starting in New York as advertising account executive. He moved to Los Angeles in 1994 to assume the role of director of marketing and special projects. In that position, he was charged with building Special Reports into a mainstay of Variety’s business. Koones was named associate publisher in March 1996.
In the past several years, Variety has enjoyed a period of unprecedented growth, which is continuing with the debut of Variety Junior, the relaunch of On Production, the late fall launch of Web site http://www.variety.com and other new initiatives. Since ’94, sales of advertising pages have grown more than 40% in Variety and more than 35% in Daily Variety.
“Charlie’s well-earned promotion comes at a pivotal time for Variety, when his proven leadership skills will be a big influence on all of Variety’s growth strategies,” Byrne said.
Koones is a native of Washington, D.C., and is a graduate of the U. of Richmond in Virginia.
