The Cow’s Orgasm

When it opened in Athens in January, "The Cow's Orgasm," an independent Greek film not supported by the Greek Film Center, became an instant box office success. Cheeky tale of a couple of country girls trying to lose their virginity will have tougher sledding outside its home base, but video distribs could find a niche for the mildly sexy saga. Setting is farming country in the north. Christina and Athanasia, both 17, are finishing high school. Christina's father, a local bigwig, wants her to marry Vangelis, the seriously sleazy guy who runs the local abattoir and who also manages a bar. Athanasia's father, a veterinarian, just wants his daughter to be happy, but her mother thinks she should make a play for Vangelis herself, since he's the most eligible bachelor in the district. The musically talented Athanasia, however, loves Murphy, who works in the bar and wants to become a professional pianist.

After secretly watching Athanasia’s father artificially inseminate a cow, in the process giving the creature a hefty orgasm, the girls decide to pursue their goals with vigor. Athanasia leads Murphy on but panics at the last moment, and the messy result is one of the film’s more “daring” scenes. Christina eventually lets Vangelis take her virginity, but it’s an unhappy experience for her, and she vows to have nothing more to do with him. Eventually, the two girls decide to seek their own destinies.

First-time feature director Olga Malea includes some racy sex, as well as a scene involving the insertion of tampons, all of it handled relatively discreetly; she also provides a liberating, upbeat ending.

Her comedy timing leaves a lot to be desired, however, and though Irini Balta and Natalia Stylianou are lively as the young heroines, some of the supporting actors are encouraged to play too broadly.

Pic is brightly packaged, with solid camerawork by Alexis Grivas.
