Producer Andy Vajna, through his post-Cinergi Pictures production shingle AGV Prods., has placed a floor bid of $7.5 million for the film and TV sequel/prequel rights to “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2,” which are being sold off by bankrupt Carolco Pictures, of which Vajna was a co-founder.

“Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” released in 1991, was one of Carolco’s biggest B.O. blockbusters, taking in just over $200 million in North America and nearly $500 million worldwide. It has proved one of the most sought-after ancillary titles for Vajna and his former (and perhaps future) partner Mario Kassar, and has given Carolco’s ex-partner Live Entertainment one of its biggest homevid moneymakers.

The picture itself was sold along with the rest of Carolco’s theatrical library last year to Canal Plus.

The film’s producer, Gale Anne Hurd, has retained a half-ownership of the underlying rights being bid on by Vajna, and (Carolco’s creditors hope) others to follow. The bid will be made public during the next court session devoted to clearing Carolco’s remaining debts by court auction.

Alice Neuhauser, president of the Carolco Liquidating Trust that is overseeing the sale of the once high-flying production company’s remaining assets, said the “Terminator” franchise rights are one of the juiciest pieces left available for bid. “In terms of the assets still available, this is possibly the biggest chunk of available rights.” Neuhauser added that she fully expected overbids to be offered on the rights to the bankruptcy court handling the Carolco selloff.

With Vajna’s bid entered, the “Terminator” sequel and prequel rights will go up for court-authorized auction sometime within the next six weeks, Neuhauser and Howard Weg, attorney for the Carolco trust, agreed. Overbids will be accepted by the court in increments of $250,000.

If Vajna wins the bid, projects from the acquired “Terminator” rights could eventually be among the first order of business for the partnership that Vajna is said to be forming with Kassar.
