SYDNEY — Trimark Pictures has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to “Heaven’s Burning,” a romantic actioner toplining Russell Crowe (“L.A. Confidential,” “Romper Stomper”) and Japan’s Youki Kudoh (“Mystery Train,” “Picture Bride”).
“Since this is the type of product we’re interested in, we’ve been tracking it for a long time,” said Trimark acquisitions veep Bobby Rock. “I’m pleased that our persistence paid off.”
Pic, written by Louis Nowra (“Map of the Human Heart”) and co-produced by Al Clarke (“The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”), portrays an unhappy Japanese honeymooner (Kudoh) who fakes her own kidnapping in Oz, only to be taken hostage in a bungled bank robbery. While fleeing across the desert, she develops romantic feelings for her captor (Crowe) and begins to enjoy the unpredictable nature of her new circumstances.
After its Cannes launch, pic was sold to Astral for Canada, ZDF for German-speaking Europe and Columbia TriStar for Latin America, Portugal, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, South Africa and much of Asia.
