‘Sweet,’ ‘Rose’ tie for top Florida fest honor

Atom Egoyan’s “The Sweet Hereafter” and Belgian helmer Alain Berliner’s “Ma Vie en Rose” tied for top honors Friday at the 12th annual Fort Lauderdale Intl. Film Festival.

“Hereafter,” which Fine Line releases in the U.S. on Friday, and “Rose,” which Sony Pictures Classics brings out in December, shared the distinguished jury award for best film.

Alan Rudolph’s “Afterglow” won the jury prize for best ensemble cast. “Afterglow” star Nick Nolte also picked up a best actor award, while “Ma Vie en Rose’s” Michele Laroque took the best actress award.

The President’s Award for best director went to Paul Chart for his debut effort, “American Perfekt.” “Rose” received the President’s Award for the best foreign-language film.

The award for best short went to “The Date,” directed by Francine McDougall.

Actor Jordan Kiziuk won an award for best feature debut performance for his work in “The Island on Bird Street.” The best original screenplay prize went to Tom Rooney for “You Are Here.”

The Laker People’s Choice Award was given to “The Island on Bird Street.”

More than 61,000 viewers attended screenings of 110 independent features from 30 countries at the fest, which ran from Oct. 27-Nov. 16.
