The ShoWest Awards will go live on TV for the first time, it was announced Friday. The nods will be broadcast March 6 at 7 p.m. by Turner Network Television, marking the second year the cable outlet has devoted coverage to the annual convention of motion picture theater owners that’s held in Las Vegas. Comedian-actor Sinbad will host the presentation.
ShoWest president Daniel Wheatcroft noted that the honors are for a body of popular work and reflect the sentiments of exhibitors and the audience. “We believe that the ShoWest Awards garner more attention each year because they consistently celebrate the best performers working in the industry,” Wheatcroft said.
The organization presents awards to a director, producer, screenwriter, actors, new performers and for career achievement. This year, it’s also adding male and female supporting actors and a favorite movie of the year. The latter will be determined by a nationally conducted vote among movie patrons. A trailer promoting the event and the poll will hit screens Feb. 7.
ShoWest ’97 runs from March 3 to 7 at Bally’s Hotel.
