Schlondorff ankles Babelsberg post

BERLIN — German director Volker Schlondorff said on Thursday that he is stepping down as managing director of Babelsberg Film Studios, but will continue to serve as a member of the board for an additional five years.

Schlondorff, who has overseen the privatization of the historic Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam near Berlin since 1992, said in an interview aired on pubcaster ZDF that Babelsberg’s modernized technical facilities should carry it through the next 50 years. He regrets, however, that television makes up three-quarters of the activity on Babelsberg’s lots. Babelsberg still hopes to attract large-scale feature film productions, but Schlondorff sees at least “three hard years” ahead in this area.
