SYDNEY — Australia’s Beyond Films is shooting its first feature film in North America with Jan De Bont’s Blue Tulip Prods. and Michael Peyser’s Straight Edge.
“SLC Punk!,” which is said to be budgeted at less than $10 million, began lensing Nov. 22 in Salt Lake City under the direction of James Merendino (“A River Made to Drown In,” “Liver Ain’t Cheap”), who also wrote the pic. It will be launched at Cannes next year by Beyond, which has worldwide sales rights (including North America).
Pic tells the story of two dedicated punks in Salt Lake City in the mid-’80s. It stars Matthew Lilard (“Scream”), Germany’s Til Schweiger (“Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”), Michael Goorjian (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Devon Sawa (“Wild America”).
“SLC Punk!,” which has no studio backing, was brought to Beyond by its L.A.-based German sales agent Andrea Kreuzhage, who is exec producing with De Bont (“Speed,” “Twister”) and Peyser (“Ruthless People,” “Desperately Seeking Susan”). Producers are Sam Maydew and Peter Ward.
“We want to do significant American films and this is our first one. It marks a first for us working with a major film company in the U.S. and we hope it’s the start of a long-term relationship for us with Blue Tulip,” Beyond Films topper Gary Hamilton told Daily Variety.
