Natl. Board of Review fetes Duvall

Actor made screen debut 35 years ago

NEW YORK — The National Board of Review will honor Robert Duvall on Feb. 9 with its 1997 career achievement award at its annual gala dinner at Tavern on the Green.

Duvall made his screen debut 35 years ago in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” He won a best actor Oscar for “Tender Mercies” and was nominated for best actor for “The Great Santini” and “The Godfather.” Duvall’s latest starring role is in October Films’ “The Apostle,” the story of a Southern preacher seeking redemption, which he also wrote, produced and directed.

Previous winners of the board’s career achievement award include Gena Rowlands, Sidney Poitier, James Stewart, Gregory Peck and Sean Connery.

The National Board of Review will vote for its annual film awards on Tuesday, and announce the winners the same day. Last year, five out of eight of the board’s award winners went on to receive Oscars.
