MGM is in active negotiations with MDP Worldwide to acquire domestic rights to “Liar,” the second feature from sibling helmers Josh & Jonas Pate and producer Peter Glatzer.
“Liar” toplines Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Michael Rooker and Renee Zellweger, and includes a cameo by Mark Damon, CEO of MDP. The modestly budgeted psychological thriller was shot in Charleston, S.C.
“Liar” is the Lion’s third indie pickup this year, with “Hurricane,” the debut feature from helmer Morgan J. Freeman coming under the United Artists label; and United Artists’ “End of Violence,” the Wim Wenders pic produced by Ciby 2000, coming under the MGM banner. Previous acquisitions include “Touch” and “Leaving Las Vegas” from Lumiere, the latter an Oscar winner.
The Pates’ previous film, “The Grave,” put the brothers on the indie map after capturing attention at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival.
MDP recently sold domestic rights to Abel Ferrara’s “Blackout” to Trimark Pictures.
