NEW YORK — An international cast including Valeria Golino (“Rain Man”), Leon (“Waiting to Exhale”), Miho Nikaido (“Flirt”), David Vadim (“G.I. Jane”), Mirjana Penezic Jokovic (“Underground”) and Shashi Kapoor (“Heat and Dust”) are starring in Tony Gerber’s “Side Streets,” which is being exec produced by Ismail Merchant.
Rounding out the cast are Shabana Azmi “(“Fire”), Art Malik (“True Lies”) and Marc Tissot (“The Proprietor”).
Co-written by Gerber and playwright Lynn Nottage, “Side Streets” is currently lensing in Gotham. A Cornerstone Films production, it is being produced by Bruce Weiss, whose previous credits include Hal Hartley’s “The Unbelievable Truth,” “Trust” and “Simple Men.”
An urban comedy, “Side Streets” tells five interconnecting stories set in each of New York’s boroughs. Gerber’s first feature, “Ant Colony,” competed in festivals worldwide and he created the film featured in the Broadway musical “Rent.” Gerber and Nottage also penned “West Wind,” a screenplay for HBO’s “American Dream.”
“This particular film has a very special theme, where people come from all over the world, share an emotional connection, and, while crossing each other’s paths, discover a new life,” said Merchant.
Cornerstone is also developing “Heart of a Dog,” based on a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov that will feature an all-star cast, and “Island of the Dead,” a supernatural thriller skedded to lens in New York early next year.
