Hurley, Elfman in talks for Howard’s ‘U’ pick

Elizabeth Hurley and Jenna Elfman (TV’s “Dharma & Greg”) are in talks to star with Matthew McConaughey and Ellen DeGeneres in Ron Howard’s “Ed-TV” for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment.

Imagine’s Brian Grazer will pro-duce the pic, scripted by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.

The comedy — with tinges of Elia Kazan’s “A Face in the Crowd” — tells the story of Ed (McConaughey), a video-store clerk who becomes an unlikely celebrity when he allows a local cable channel to shoot his every movement, 24-hours a day.

DeGeneres will portray the TV exec who convinces Ed to do the show. Elfman would play Ed’s steady girlfriend, and Hurley would portray a woman normally out of Ed’s league but who is attracted to the newly minted big shot.

A remake of Michel Poulette’s 1994 French-Canadian film “Louis 19: Le Roi des Ondes” (Louis 19: King of the Airwaves”), the film marks How-ard’s first helming stint since the 1996 “Ransom.” Pic is expected to begin production in mid-March.

Actress-producer-model Hurley recently wrapped the big-screen version of “My Favorite Martian” and “Permanent Midnight.” She made her first outing as a producer with “Extreme Measures,” which starred her Simian Films partner, Hugh Grant. She next will produce “Mickey Blue-Eyes” at Castle Rock.

Elfman stars opposite Thomas Gib-son in the ABC sitcom “Dharma & Greg”; she previously starred in ABC’s “Townies.” The actress made her feature debut in “Grosse Pointe Blank” and moved to a lead in the upcoming “Krippendorf’s Tribe.”

Hurley is repped by CAA’s Jane Berliner and Michael Nilon. Elfman is repped by Michael Slessinger & Associates and managed by More/Medavoy.
