‘Gattaca’ tops Catalan fest

SITGES, Spain — The U.S. film “Gattaca,” directed by Andrew Niccol, picked up the prize for best pic at the Catalan Intl. Film Festival here, which wrapped Oct. 19.

In a decision that was hotly disputed by local critics, Scott Reynolds won best director prize for “The Ugly.” Less controversial were the prizes for best actor, which went to Sam Rockwell for “Lawn Dogs,” and best actress, awarded to Reese Witherspoon for her role in “Freeway.”

Formerly a festival devoted to the fantasy genre, the competition section at Sitges now is open to any film. One of the top four fests in Spain, Sitges still has considerable pulling power: This year’s guests included Wong Kar-wai, Martin Sheen, Marco Bellocchio and John Mills, who presented the David Lean retrospective.
