“Passionate Kiss,” a romantic comedy with a supernatural twist, was acquired by DreamWorks this week in a preemptive bid of $350,000 against $600,000.
Based on an original story by producer Robert Solo, the script is by John Madden, who wrote and will direct “Major League 3” for Morgan Creek this summer. The yarn centers on a short-lived romantic relationship that ends with the woman putting a curse on the errant man. The repercussions of her hex provide the comic fuel for the story.
Solo, the vet producer of such films as “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “Colors” and “Blue Sky,” had been developing the project for several years without success. He credited his agent Lynn Pleshette with teaming him up with Madden — a CAA client — and pushing the spec along.
“It was a very strong idea, but I think the studios have become extremely cautious about comedies and intimate dramas in the past couple of years,” said Solo. “It’s very hard to sell anything other than a special effects story on a pitch.”
The completed script was sent to DreamWorks and one other company at the beginning of the week, with immediate interest registered from both parties. However, DreamWorks quickly stepped up its interest, establishing a price and deal points to take the property off the market.
Solo will produce the feature, which is expected to go before the cameras before the end of the year.
