‘Wasteland’ tops doc fest

AMSTERDAM — “Wasteland” (Auf der Kippe), a film about the plight of gypsies in Romania by German filmmaker Andrei Schwartz, took home the Joris Ivens Award, the highest prize given at the 10th Intl. Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

The event, next to “Sunny Side of the Docs” in Marseilles, is the largest gathering of documentary filmmakers and their fans in the world. It drew some 51,000 visitors and more than 800 international guests from 50 countries before it wrapped Dec. 3.

Werner Herzog’s “Little Dieter Needs to Fly” won a Special Jury Prize, with jurors calling it an “outrageous” film. The Fipresci Jury Prize, given by a panel of international journalists, went to “Anthem, An American Road Story,” directed by Shaine Gabel and Kirstin Hahn.
