Toronto bows for ‘Sea,’ ‘Edge’

TORONTO — Beeban Kidron’s “Swept From the Sea” and Lee Tamahori’s “The Edge” will be on view as world premiere galas at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, running Sept. 4-13.

In their announcement this week, festival officials did not disclose specific dates for the screenings.

“Swept From the Sea,” inspired by Joseph Conrad’s short story “Amy Foster,” is Kidron’s first film made in Britain since helming “Used People” and “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar” in the U.S.

Rachel Weisz (“Stealing Beauty”) portrays a girl written off as a simpleton by her community who collects things washed ashore by the sea — including Vincent Perez (“The Crow: City of Angels,” “Indochine”), who plays an immigrant shipwrecked off the coast of England.

The film also stars Kathy Bates, Ian McKellen, Joss Ackland, Tom Bell and Zoe Wanamaker. Music was written by composer John Barry (“Out of Africa,” “Dances With Wolves”). The film is distributed by TriStar Pictures.

Tamahori (“Once Were Warriors”) directs Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, Elle MacPherson, L.Q. Jones and Harold Perrineau in “The Edge,” based on a screenplay by David Mamet .

The film, shot in Alberta and the Pacific Northwest, explores the relationship between two men, with markedly different world views, as they battle for survival in the Alaskan wilderness.
