Pix set for 1st East Asian fest

KUALA LUMPUR — Ten films from 18 participating countries have been selected to compete for the Penang Pearl Award in the first East Asian Film and TV Festival, which begins Thursday and runs through Sept. 3.

The films are: “Kokh” (India); “12 Storeys” (Singapore); “Pedar” (Iran); “Dorakada Marava” (Sri Lanka); “Merah” (Malaysia); “Bakit May Kahapon Pa” (the Philippines); “Sorrow of Brooke Steppe” (Hong Kong); “Strange Sisters” (Iran); “Gingko Bed” (South Korea); and “Final Justice” (Hong Kong).

Awards will be given out for 19 categories including best picture, best actress and best actor. The awards are made from pewter, an alloy synonymous with Malaysia and a favorite souvenir item with foreign tourists.

The fest is financially supported by the Penang government at the popular holiday resort known as Pearl of the Orient. It is about four hours from the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The Intl. East Asia Film, Television, Advertising and Broadcasting market will be held simultaneously with the fest. More than 70 key acquisition execs from East Asian companies are expected to participate.
