Viacom Inc. is rapidly expanding its footprint in one of today’s hottest arenas: the World Wide Web. The company announced the creation of one new significant site via its MTV cable franchise and the consolidation and expansion of two previous sites into one larger one.
MTV and search-engine powerhouse Yahoo! Inc. are teaming up to present unfURLed, a pop music-oriented site that will focus primarily on Web-related happenings, news, gossip and the like. Developers say it will also sport one of the most comprehensive list of links to other sites available to surfers today.
“The idea of it is really to be a gateway to musical events and sites all over the Net,” said Justin Herz, MTV’s director of interactive development. “You couple the comprehensiveness of Yahoo! with the sensibility of MTV, and you get the idea of unfURLed.”
“Working with MTV, we have created a fun and informative site for our users to find exactly what they want most in the world of music,” added Jeff Mallett, Yahoo!’s senior veepee of business operations.
Additionally, Viacom’s interactive solons are joining their Nickelodeon Networks’ “Nick at Nite” and “TV Land” sites together in a larger, more encyclopedic area, http://www.nick-at-nite.com, that will sport more interactive elements.
Senior veep of Nickelodeon Media Works Scott Webb said the joining of the two sites allows the developers to concentrate on the networks’ retro-chic strengths and eliminate unnecessary duplication.
