NBC bows Times Sq. vidscreen

NBC and Panasonic today will switch on their new Astrovision display in New York’s Times Square, just in time for next week’s New Year’s Eve revelry.

The new sign, replacing Sony Corp.’s Jumbotron at One Times Square, will operate from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily, broadcasting video from news, weather, sports and entertainment programming on NBC, WNBC, CNBC and MSNBC. Commercial slots will be filled with ads for Panasonic products, community-service spots and messages promoting Times Square’s renewal efforts.

The sign, a joint venture of NBC and Panasonic, will be operated from CNBC studios in Ft. Lee, N.J.
