Island Records has tapped Pat Monaco to the newly created post of senior VP-G.M., where he will oversee the sales, promotion and marketing departments. Monaco, who will report to label chairman Chris Blackwell, fills the void created by the departure of label prexy Johnny Barbis.
The nod to Monaco, who has had a long association with Island Records and most recently as veep of the independent label sales division of PGD, the distributor of all the Polygram family labels, had been expected. (Daily Variety, Oct. 28).
Barbis, who ankled his post last month as part of a restructuring begun by Blackwell, is expected to surface within Polygram, possibly as chief of a new label.
At the time of Barbis’ ankling, Blackwell said he would assume interim prexy duties. (Daily Variety, Aug. 9).
Monaco is known as a sales and promo powerhouse who began his career in the proverbial record label mailroom more than 25 years ago.
He also was president and co-owner of Landmark Distribution, which distributed releases from Island’s Mango and 4th & Broadway labels.
Landmark, which Monaco sold in 1989 to join ILS, also worked with a variety of labels spanning all genres of music.
“There is a long history at Island that I am extremely proud to be part of,” Monaco said.
Blackwell called Monaco an “extremely dedicated and talented executive.”
