HONG KONG – Chinese film “In the Heat of the Sun” won six prizes at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, which are considered the top honor for Chinese-language films.
Jiang Wen was named best director and Xia Yu was named best actor for the film, which is about teenagers growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution. The Chinese government banned them from attending the ceremony because the film was submitted without approval from Beijing. It was the first time in the 33-year history of the awards that mainland films were allowed to compete.
Josephine Siao of Hong Kong took home best actress prize for her work in the Taiwanese film “Stage Door.” That makes it two in a row for Siao, who won last year for “Summer Snow.” After completing two more films, Siao, 48, said she will retire due to her failing hearing.
