Phil Collins has been MusiCares Person of the Year by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. The singer-songwriter will be honored at a gala dinner, which kicks off a week-long celebration of events related to the 39th annual Grammy Awards, in New York on Feb. 24.
NARAS has also tapped Atlantic Group co-chairmen/CEOs Ahmet Ertegun and Val Azzoli and composer Quincy Jones – last year’s honoree – to co-chair the event set for the Waldorf-Astoria.
Collins “captures the spirit and purpose of MusiCares through his humanitarian efforts, philanthropic leadership and generosity,” said Mike Greene, president/CEO of NARAS.
Collins, who is an annual participant in the Prince’s Trust Concert, which supports charities for children and the homeless, also regularly donates portions of his concert revenues to shelters and charities benefiting the homeless.
Through its foundation, MusiCares provides financial aid and referrals to music industry professionals during times of personal crisis.
