Theater sound-system maker Digital Theater Systems is proving it can create lightning as well as thunder.

A special version of the teaser trailer for Universal’s upcoming “Jurassic Park” sequel “Lost World” uses DTS-driven strobe lights inside the theater to provide lightning-like effects during a rainstorm scene.

The trailer, which debuted Dec. 13 at 42 locations in the U.S. and Toronto, uses six strobe lights that are synchronized to the print via the same DTS sync code used to run the film’s CD-ROM soundtrack.

In the L.A. area, the effect currently is in use on screens 1 and 14 at the Cineplex Odeon’s Universal City Cinemas.

“It’s one thing to create lightning on the screen, but when you also have it coming from the rear and sides, it creates a whole environment,” said DTS president and chief operating officer Bill Neighbors.

At a cost of $14,000 per site, however, it’s not likely the strobes will be used when the sequel is released Memorial Day.

DTS, which is owned in part by both Universal and Amblin Entertainment, was launched with the release of the companies’ “Jurassic Park” in 1993.
