Mark S. Lieberman is joining Cahners Publishing Co. as executive vice president, entertainment, communications and media, where he will spearhead an aggressive program of acquisition and development, it was announced by Bruce Barnet, president and chief executive officer.
In this newly created position, Lieberman’s executive responsibilities will cover a wide range of Cahners publications in the entertainment, publishing, computer and communications sectors, including overseeing Variety, Daily Variety, Publishers Weekly, Fiber Optics and Datamation.
An attorney by training, Lieberman, 37, has been president of Abel Technologies Inc., a New York-based merchant banking company that formed several multimedia and infotainment companies. His clients have been in such areas as video-on-demand, licensing and Internet services, among others.
Before that, Lieberman held several posts with the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, including associate deputy secretary and assistant secretary for technology. He initiated the National Information Infrastructure project and the National Technology Initiative.
In commenting on the appointment, Barnet said: “Mark’s considerable experience in media and technology, coupled with his unique entrepreneurial perspective, will help Cahners extend its existing brands and acquire new businesses in the entertainment arena, as we build an electronic entertainment community.”
