Luft records duets with mom Garland

GOOD MORNING: First there was Natalie and Nat — Cole that is — dueting on “Unforgettable.” Now there’s Judy and Lorna, Garland and Luft. The two ladies are joined, thanks to today’s terrif tonal technologies, on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Judy sang the Ralph Blane-Hugh Martin tune in the 1944 MGM classic “Meet Me in St. Louis.” Lorna played the record for me, and I can tell you to get the Kleenex ready. But you’ll have to go to London to buy the single, which goes out Dec. 4 on the Carlton label, not ready in the U.S. until Christmas ’96. Lorna just recorded it two weeks ago. There’s also a video and Thursday, at Lorna’s house, the Christmas tree was up and being lensed here with her two children, Vanessa and Jesse. The video also will show Judy singing to an 11-year-old Lorna on the 1963 CBS “Judy Garland Christmas Show,” plus Lorna recording the song with her two children, all placed on the same screen. An album is also forthcoming, produced by Peter Matz, while Gordon Lorenz did the “Merry” single. Lorna’s further family good news: She and Colin Freeman will wed July 6 at the Eastmore castle in England … Add happy holiday family news: “Christmas Song” tunesmith Mel Torme and wife Ali have reconciled … Among the international showbiz toppers coming to the Broadway bow of “Victor, Victoria” Wednesday are Japan’s NHK execs. They are interested in doing a high-definition videotape of the show, with Steve Binder directing. Julie Andrews had long regretted the fact there was no video record of her B’way ‘My Fair Lady.” Tony Adams had tried in vain 18 years ago to reunite Julie, Rex Harrison and other B’way cast members of “MFL,” to have that classic for posterity … Barney’s Wilshire Boulevard will be the site Nov. 13 for the sixth Fire & Ice Ball. The store will loan floors 2-4 for the gala, to benefit the Revlon/UCLA Women’s Cancer Research Program. Lilly Tartikoff co-chairs with Patricia Duff, Sherry Lansing, Evelyn Ostin, Bonnie Pressman and Jane Semel. Ron Perelman is contributing $1.2 million and it’s hoped it’ll be matched by the 1,200 attending.

Mathilde Krim, the leading force of AmFAR, was intro’d by Harvey Weinstein, who also made the intros of the pic’s producer Jean Doumanian and Woody’s co-star, Mira Sorvino, who was there with papa Paul … Meanwhile, in L.A., after the preem of WB’s “Copycat” at the studio’s Steve Ross Theater, the pic’s sinister Harry Connick Jr. sat down with the band and played several tunes, including a dedication of “All of Me” to director Jon Amiel. Co-stars on hand included Sigourney Weaver (leaving for Prague and “Snow White”), Holly Hunter, Dermot Mulroney and William McNamara … Jean Simmons claims, “I keep retiring, but my stepdaughter (agent Lindsay Granger) won’t let me!” Now on the bigscreen in “How to Make an American Quilt,” Simmons will next be seen Dec. 3 on Showtime’s “Daisies in December.” She is now visiting her sister Lorna in England, near the location where she filmed “Daisies” with co-star Joss Ackland, with whom she also co-starred on London’s boards in “A Little Night Music.”
