ODD COUPLE: Directors Clint Eastwood and John Waters were swapping stories in a Middletown, Conn., hotel bar for hours, following the 10th anni of Wesleyan’s Cinema Archives. The helmers donated their papers, etc., to the U. The duo, plus Martin Scorsese, had earlier participated in a seminar (moderated by Daily Variety’s Todd McCarthy). In talking about the days of Bogart, Gary Cooper, etc., Clint admitted those stars would never have had an opportunity to direct — because of the number of films they starred in annually. They paid tribute to those versatile talents. Also in attendance for the celebration at the archives founded by Jeanine Basinger was Isabella Rossellini (briefly married to Scorsese). She contributed her mother Ingrid Bergman’s papers to the archives. Rossellini’s current beau, Gary Oldman, accompanied Isabella. Also there, Robert Vaughn. The accomplished trio of directors rebuked Bob Dole for his anti-Hollywood remarks. Eastwood, who has supported some GOP presidential candidates in the past, said Dole’s remarks were “just politics.” Waters laughed, “I wished he picked on one of my movies.”
