New England Cable News (NECN), which has produced the 10 p.m. news for Fox station WFXT-TV for the past two years, has changed partners. Effective Oct. 2, it will instead produce a 10 p.m. newscast for rival UPN superstation WSBK.

NECN was close to renewing the WFXT contract when WSBK came up with a better offer for a longer-term relationship. The Fox station was planning to begin eventually producing its own newscast, but those plans have now been moved up to early 1996.

Five-year deal

The NECN/WSBK deal is for a minimum of five years, providing WSBK with a newscast labelled “UPN38 Prime News” but featuring NECN anchors and reporters. NECN will be able to access WSBK’s 4.3 million homes, up from the 1.5 million homes carrying NECN directly. WSBK gets a newscast with its own ID.

Under the recently concluded partnership with Group W’s WBZ wherein WBZ produced a 10 p.m. newscast for WSBK, the newscast carried WBZ logos throughout.
