RISS REMAKES ‘PURPOSE’ INTO A’WINNER’

Playwright Wendy Riss has turned “A Darker Purpose,” done two seasons ago by the Gotham-based theater company Naked Angels, into a film script, “The Winner.” Alex Cox (“Sid and Nancy”) will direct it starting next month in Las Vegas, with Rebecca DeMornay and Vincent D’Onofrio starring.

Mark Damon’s MDP financed the $9 million budget, and Ken Schwenker produces. It’s the story of what happens when a habitually losing gambler goes on a winning streak. Riss has just completed her first spec screenplay, called “Blind Love,” a noir love story set in Florida, and her William Morris agent Mary Meagher will bring it to market within two weeks.
