‘Independence Day’ Joins Sci-Fi Explosion

Helmer Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin, whose “Stargate” helped trigger the sci-fi rush – even though the film did better with audiences than reviewers – are going back to the well.

Buyers are poring over a script they co-wrote, called “Independence Day,” an epic story of a massive space invasion, which Emmerich would direct. It’s being sold by CAA’s Michael Wimmer.

If the project lands, it would join the increasingly crowded field of major sci-fi projects, which includes Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks!,” Paul Verhoeven’s “Starship Troopers,” Fox’s “Planet of the Apes” remake, Paramount’s “Stranger in a Strange Land” with Tom Hanks, and “Deep Impact,” from Steven Spielberg and producers David Brown and Richard Zanuck.
