The Deputy

Music Theater Intl. chairman Freddie Gershon has moved quickly to replace his irreplaceable lieutenant, Greg Smith, who died in late January, and the choice was the most logical one: Stephen Spiegel, Smith’s longtime protege. As vice president and managing director, Spiegel will oversee the licensing of more than 8,000 productions of shows in the MTI catalog to some 35,000 groups annually.

An MTI veteran of 15 years, Spiegel is an expert in the arcana of rights licensing and was instrumental in developing the comprehensive guides made available to schools and other organizations to help make that spring production of “The Music Man” right in River City.
