OSCAR’S SONGS

Kudos to Bert Fink, of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, for producing a wonderful, compact tribute to Oscar Hammerstein II on July 12 at the Gerswhin; the date marked what would have been the lyricist’s 100th birthday . R & H head Ted Chapin was the host and narrator, and singers Maureen McGovern, Doug LaBrecque, Rebecca Luker, Liz Callaway, Michel Bell, Dorothy Stanley & Joel Blum, and Jonathan Dokuchitz sang.

The 50-minute program featured one previously unknown gem, a lyric titled “Suddenly Lovely,” written for – and dropped from – “South Pacific” to the melody that became “Getting to Know You” in “The King and I.” The song was discovered last year among Hammerstein’s papers at the Library of Congress , and got its debut last week.
