Donald G. McNeil Jr., the New York Times’ legit columnist and reporter, will ankle those slots sometime during the summer, sources at the paper confirmed Jan. 24.
McNeil and his wife, Times reporter Suzanne Daley, will be moving to Johannesburg, where she is to become the paper’s South Africa bureau chief and he will be a correspondent.
No replacement has been announced for McNeil, who replaced Bruce Weber last fall as the “On Stage, and Off” columnist. But cultural news editor Daniel Lewis insisted that the paper is committed to continuing the column.
Lewis also said that Margo Jefferson, who was recently named as the Times’ Sunday theater critic, would likely make her first appearance in the Arts & Leisure section on Feb. 12 or 19.
Press agents around the city have noted that Jefferson, currently a staff book critic at the paper, has been feverishly catching up on the legit scene.
