B.O. Up; ‘Valour!’ 226g

Almost every show on Broadway took an upturn in receipts during Week 39 (Feb. 20-26), yielding a $7,373,863 return – a 2.1% bump over the previous week. Attendance was up too: 174,961 seats sold for a 4.4% jump.

The take didn’t include receipts from “Jackie Mason: Politically Incorrect,” which took the week off. Only three shows dropped in receipts: “Blood Brothers” (down $30,000), “The Heiress” (still previewing) and “Uncle Vanya,” heavy with nonpaying crix during its opening week.

The Roundabout “The Moliere Comedies” was the only non-tuner playing to capacity audiences, while “Love! Valour! Compassion!” improved at the Walter Kerr.

On the musical front, big jumps were taken by “Cats,” “Show Boat,” “Tommy” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” pulling up a bit from a series of slow weeks. “Beauty and the Beast,” “Sunset Boulevard” and “Grease” played to SRO crowds.

Receipts for the musicals totaled $6,572,978,89% of the Broadway total, with paid attendance of 147,474 at 97.1% of musical capacity. Plays tallied $800,885,11% of the total, with attendance of 27,487 at 80.6% of play capacity.

Average ticket prices were $42.14 for all shows, $44.57 for musicals and $29.13 for plays.
