Veteran international sales and distribution exec Robert Meyers has been named president of Village Roadshow Pictures Intl., a new division focusing on film distribution in the Asia-Pacific region.

Village Roadshow president Greg Coote announced the appointment and the new division Feb. 10. The Oz-based company has been engaged in building a growing number of multiplex cinemas in the Far East as a partner in Golden Village, a joint venture with Hong Kong-based Golden Harvest.

“I think we will be a significant player in that part of the world,” Meyers told Variety. “It’s good to be working with old friends.”

Meyers will be acquiring movies for Village Roadshow’s existing pipelines in Australia and New Zealand, as well as for Asian distribution. He will also be representing movies produced by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Meyers is a former president of Orion Pictures Intl. and Filmways Pictures, and he served in international exec posts at Columbia and Lorimar. As the first president of the American Film Market, Meyers says he is looking forward to attending the 15th edition of the film bazaar.
