In the war of East Euro special interests, the Union of Czech Producers has thrown its support behind the upstart fest in Prague, rather than the five-decades old, A-certified Karlovy Vary festival.
Supporters of the Prague fest – the Golden Golem Intl. Film Festival – say their 50,000-plus American residents should give them the edge. Ex-Karlovy Vary fest director Antonin Moskalyk heads the Golem effort and claims UCP endorsement.
UCP support is crucial in wresting A status from Vary; Intl. Federation of Film Producers Assn. allows only one A fest per nation.
