Projects Down The Pike

The following international projects were launched by the world’s leading industrial countries at the G7 conference on the infopike February 24-26 in Brussels:

1. Project to increase links between databases on the environment and natural resources. Sponsor: United States

2. Project to create online computer services that can help small businesses work together internationally. Sponsors: United States, Japan, European Commission

3. Project to promote maritime communications networks to improve safety and protection of the environment in and on the oceans. Sponsors: Canada, European Commission

4. Project to link national emergency information systems and networks for managing natural disasters. Sponsor: Canada

5. Project to increase and encourage use of e-mail and computer technology by governments. Sponsors: Canada, Great Britain

6. Project to develop faster telecommunications networks worldwide for distribution of multimedia products and services. Sponsors: Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Japan

7. Project to create multimedia inventory of infopike projects to promote development of the “information society.” Sponsors: European Commission, Japan

8. Project to create multimedia electronic reference libraries available worldwide. Sponsors: Japan, France

9. Project to show how computer networks can help fight health crises, including a worldwide health information network, linked disease databases and creation of a 24-hour multilingual health service. Sponsors: France, Germany, Italy

10. Project to create worldwide computer network for exchange of training material for language teachers. Sponsors: France, Germany

11. Project to promote multimedia networks to offer access to the various cultures’ heritages.
