Roseanne’s TV pregnancy comes to life

GOOD MORNING: Roseanne happily reports that she and Ben Thomas are expecting in August — thanks to successful in-vitro fertilization. The real-life expectancy goes hand in hand with her TV infanticipation with John Goodman … Burt Reynolds starts a new chapter in his life with the settlement with Loni Anderson Tuesday on child support of son Quinton and — Burt also goes back to work. Patty Duke asked Reynolds to guestar in the “Hallelujah” seg (how appropriate!) of her NBC “Amazing Grace” series shooting in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He plays an “Elmer Gantry”-like character to Duke’s minister in the one-hour series. Reynolds signed with UTA’s Marty Bauer and Patrick Whitesee and has several pix perking as well in his new life … Diana Ross, en route to Tokyo for three sold-out concerts, stopped here to meet with Gary and Andy Adelson to star in “The Retta Williams Story.” producing along with her Anaid banner. The true story is about a Washington, D.C., mother who enlisted the aid of halfway house ex-cons to find her kidnapped 12-year-old son. Diana, lawyer John Frankenheimer and ICM agent Ed Limato trio’d at Morton’s … HBO Pictures senior VP Robert Cooper turned into “Roberto, The Great Magician” at Tuesday p.m.’s screening of HBO’s “Witch Hunt” comedy starring Dennis Hopper and Penelope Ann Miller. Cooper told me he used to perform magic at parties, etc., when he was a kid. “So, I just reverted to what I used to do.” To launch the screening at the DGA, Cooper “blew up” in a puff of smoke — and reappeared as Penelope Ann Miller — who intro’d the film. “Everybody thinks HBO is so serious,” Cooper said. “It’s fun to fool them once in a while.” Meanwhile, again on the serious side, HBO has picked up William Gaddis’ National Book Award winner “A Frolic of His Own” to film along with Citadel. Cooper says this book “is to the legal profession what ‘Barbarians at the Gate’ was to big business.” Stan Daniel will script, David R. Ginsburg is exec producer.

THE MALTESE FALCON (prop) was bought at auction by Ron Winston (Harry Winston Inc.) for $360,000 (plus commission). Winston told me he would have gone as high as a million. “Maybe we’ll unearth the treasure that eluded Humphrey Bogart ,” he laughed. He doesn’t know what the house of Winston will do with the Falcon. They had reproduced the “Wizard of Oz” ruby shoes in real rubies, you recall. He says the movie Falcon, made of lead with bronze patina, weighs 45 pounds –“and almost broke Bogart’s foot when it fell on him”… For tonight’s Fire & Ice Ball, Giorgio Armani has taken two stages at 20th Century Fox. The first is for the showing of his spring ’95 line, the second for an Italian garden setting for the dinner. There will be none of the usual benefit night music, song and comedians. Lilly Tartikoff, who chairs with Revlon’s Ron Perelman, said Armani “wanted the evening to be ‘gracious.’ ” Bob Keene produces. The ball will raise $ 1.5 million for the Revlon/UCLA Women’s Cancer Research Program. In addition, the Revlon Foundation made a $ 7.5 million gift for research at UCLA’s School of Medicine’s women’s health programs; the gift is to be made over a six-year program … Lilly Tartikoff will introduce Isabella Rossellini, whose mother, Ingrid Bergman, had breast cancer in an era when no one spoke about it — and no one was able to do much about it. Michele Pfeiffer will introduce Armani, who features some of his top models from Milan, plus L.A.’s loveliest. Expected in the audience are Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Veronica Wolfe and Lauren Hutton … From Luxor, Egypt, Marsha Mason says the Cairo film fest folk have been most gracious to her and are “making a very serious effort to acquire visibility in the world film fest arena.” Mason said she’s seen movies from the Ukraine, Turkey, etc., while there. Eric Pleskow is jury topper. Nicolas Cage and Oliver Stone are expected there imminently to participate. Although the fest was unable to get prints of Mason’s “The Goodbye Girl,” she says they were able to view, via Star satellite, “Only When I Laugh.” She just wound TNT’s “Broken Trust,” playing a “pistol-totin’ judge.”

AN 80TH BIRTHDAY PARTY will be held for Dorothy Lamour Friday at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Parisian Courtyard, where a street will be renamed Rue de Lamour. Bob Hope will be on hand to toast his longtime co-star at Paramount … George Stevens Jr. segues from the Kennedy Center to D.C.’s Pension Building, where on Sunday he, son Michael and Dwight Hemion will tape “Christmas in Washington” to air Dec. 14 on NBC. Helen Hunt m.c.’s and the cast includes Anita Baker, Jon Secada, Kenny G, Tim McGraw, Kathy Mattea, etc. President Clinton and the First Lady will attend — as will Chelsea (who was absent from last Sunday’s show).
