THE MALTESE FALCON (prop) was bought at auction by Ron Winston (Harry Winston Inc.) for $360,000 (plus commission). Winston told me he would have gone as high as a million. “Maybe we’ll unearth the treasure that eluded Humphrey Bogart ,” he laughed. He doesn’t know what the house of Winston will do with the Falcon. They had reproduced the “Wizard of Oz” ruby shoes in real rubies, you recall. He says the movie Falcon, made of lead with bronze patina, weighs 45 pounds –“and almost broke Bogart’s foot when it fell on him”… For tonight’s Fire & Ice Ball, Giorgio Armani has taken two stages at 20th Century Fox. Expected in the audience are Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Veronica Wolfe and Lauren Hutton … From Luxor, Egypt, Marsha Mason says the Cairo film fest folk have been most gracious to her and are “making a very serious effort to acquire visibility in the world film fest arena.” Mason said she’s seen movies from the Ukraine, Turkey, etc., while there. Eric Pleskow is jury topper. Nicolas Cage and Oliver Stone are expected there imminently to participate. Although the fest was unable to get prints of Mason’s “The Goodbye Girl,” she says they were able to view, via Star satellite, “Only When I Laugh.” She just wound TNT’s “Broken Trust,” playing a “pistol-totin’ judge.”
