Pilot “XXX’s & OOO’s,” produced by Brandon Tartikoff’s Moving Target Prods. and John Wilder’s Nightwatch Prods., hits the air as a telefilm that spotlights four attractive Nashville women chirping the blues over male problems. Unskedded as a series on CBS’ fall slate, vidpic plays like a deep-fried ‘Sisters.”

Teleplay by esteemed writer-producer Wilder and Alice Randall and directed efficiently enough by Allan Arkush sets up energetic situations that peter out into melodrama. With less artifice and forced angles, drama could develop into a substantial weekly hour series, since Nashville remains ripe for dramatization.

Kelly Morgan (Andrea Parker), now a deejay, was hitched to singer-tunewriter Bucky Dean (Paul Gross); he, having drunk away a soaring career, is trying to dry out. Embittered Pam Randall (Debrah Farentino), dumped by bigtime singer George Randall (Jesse Vint) after she helped into the bigtime, is raising their teenage son Sonny (Eddie Mills).

Eager to prove herself as a promoter, Tennessee debutante Reed Barrett (Susan Walters) latches onto the ailing Bucky; she also joins forces with powerful record exec-sadist Bullet Dobbs (David Keith) and plans to showcase a reconstituted Bucky at the opening of her new roadhouse, XXX’s & OOO’s.

Reed and sorority sister Sasha Townes (Nia Peeples), perky and dim, are supposedly fast friends but seem to have nothing in common. Sasha kicked out her hubby, superstar Kyle Townes (Brad Johnson), when she caught him playing around — and now she hasn’t anything but their infant daughter, a bicycle and two jobs.

“X-O” brings on good-looking women, corruption, (implied) kinky sex, the Nashville sound (Trisha Yearwood warbles the theme, Pam Tillis overwhelms at a baptism), creaky plotting and folks’ hand-wringing decisions.

But the leading roles come off as desperately reaching for stereotypes, not genuine people.

Program could use more outrageous Nashville examples — Keith’s absurdly villainous Bullet is a possible kick in the right direction. Vidpic hauls in faithlessness, hazy flashbacks, mistaken (and awkwardly planted) lesbianism, a car chase, an auto crash, a major character’s death and only peripheral involvement in country music and showbiz.

Acting is surface stuff, but the Nashville shots in the opening look terrif. Production looks classy. Michael Gershman’s lensing, Neil Mandelberg’s editing hit the mark, and Cynthia Charette’s production design is appropriate.
